In order to generate a quote we'll need to know: How the image will be used:

  • For instance, Brochure? Annual report? Magazine cover? Trade show display panel? Web site banner or button?
  • The number of impressions, if print, or specific uses: For instance, 500,000 copies? Three trade shows? Four web pages?
  • The placement, if print: For instance, Cover? Inside?
  • The relative size of the image: For instance, Full page? Half? Quarter?

Based on your information, we will generate a formal, written quote and provide it to you via email. This written quote will include the specs you've provided and the details of the license we will provide. A written quote helps insure that there aren't any of those pesky misunderstandings later on.

But what you REALLY want to know is, can my budet handle the cost of the photographs we want to use? So the short answer to everybody's question, "What does it cost?" is ... between $250 for an "inside editorial" use (our minimum fee per photo) to $20,000 and up for a complete buyout of a single image. Brochure uses vary from $325 for quarter-page inside with a press run of less than 5,000 ... to $625 for a full page and a press run of 20,000 to 50,000 ... to $1,135 for a cover with 20k to 50k press run. Ads in consumer magazines with national distribution vary from $675 for a quarter page, to $1,350 and up for a full page. Packaging runs from $600 for spot use on a small run of less than 10,000, to $1,575 and up for a photo that occupies most of the package front and press runs of 100,000 to 250,000. Seem complicated? You bet — that's why we will always ask you for the details, then e-mail back a written, computer-generated quotation.

Delivery and Payment

A license for an approved specific use will be issued immediately on your notification of approval of a quote. The image or images will be transmitted by e-mail attachment, FTP upload/download, on CD, but only rarely as original transparencies. This license incorporates an invoice. As is standard practice in the stock photo industry, the license does not become active until the invoice is paid. First time customers are requested to pre-pay before delivery. If your company requires a purchase order number and/or a job number, be sure to indicate them when ordering. Prompt payment is essential for future service. We presently accept Visa or MasterCard. Please call our sales department with any questions.

How are the images delivered? Most of Military Stock Photography's images are shot on 35mm transparency film and scanned at 2700 or 4000dpi using a Nikon LS4000 scanner. This new scanner provides drum-scan quality without having to remove the film from its mount. The LS4000 includes “Digital Ice” technology that very effectively removes every trace of dust and scratches (both of which are almost always present to some degree on every slide), producing a very clean image. Uncompressed, these files are about 30mb to about 55mb in size. These files are too large to send as e-mail attachments so virtually all images are now delivered via e-mail as JPGs of about 2mb.

Copyright Protection & Unauthorized Use

Digital delivery of images makes control of use much more difficult than the old system of providing a physical transparency or print, and it allows far more people to have custody of an the same image at the same time. Even so, once an image is delivered to a client for consideration, it is the client's responsibility — spelled out in the delivery memo — to safeguard it. With a very few exceptions, every image on the site is protected by US and International copyright law. Unauthorized, unlicensed uses are sadly quite common — and very expensive infringements of the photographer's or copyright-holder's intellectual property rights. Copyright protection exists from the moment the film is exposed and applies to any format, and every medium, including the preview images displayed on this site.

While it is now very easy to copy these images from the site or from books or magazine articles in which they may appear, it is extremely dangerous. When the image has been protected by formal submission to the Library of Congress Copyright Office, as nearly all the ones on this site have been, statutory damages and attorney's fees can be awarded — well over $100,000 per infringement. Military Stock Photography vigorously protects the intellectual property rights of its photographers. Documented unauthorized use will result in a demand for the normal fee for the use ... TIMES TEN.

We caught a small company blatantly using some of our images on T-shirts recently and it cost them $10,000; they were happy to pay it after they discovered it could have been much, much more. But we'd much rather just bill you the normal fee the first time.
